Last Friday, March 22nd, peer leaders and adult advisors from the Sources of Strength program congregated at the W.T. Brookshire Conference Center for a retreat aimed at bolstering mental health promotion and suicide prevention efforts across East Texas. With a mission to cultivate healthy norms and culture within schools, Sources of Strength stands as a beacon of hope, aiming to prevent adverse outcomes by fostering wellbeing, resilience, and belonging among youth.

Unlike traditional approaches solely focused on risk factors, Sources of Strength adopts an upstream model, fortifying multiple sources of support for young individuals. By leveraging the power of peer social networks, the program instills healthy coping mechanisms and promotes help-seeking behaviors, thereby combating suicide, violence, bullying, and substance misuse.

The retreat, attended by 36 students and five staff members from ECHS as well as students from across East Texas, served as a platform for sharing strategies to disseminate messages of hope, help, and strength throughout campuses. Through interactive workshops and collaborative discussions, participants explored innovative ways to spread awareness and create a supportive environment for their peers.

With its emphasis on proactive intervention and community engagement, Sources of Strength has emerged as a vital resource in the fight against youth mental health crises. By empowering students to become agents of change within their schools, the program not only saves lives but also cultivates a culture of empathy and resilience, ensuring that no student struggles alone.
